I went to Finland in July 2000 for work. Since Finnish and Japanese governments made an amateur radio international reciprocal operating agreements, I applied in advance
and obtained an operation permitting license. I brought a handheld transceiver of UHF/VHF. Just before my trip to Finland, I could communicate with Helsinki ham, OH2BMA, on 14 MHz band
and I asked his contact information to meet him there.
I spent about five days in Tampere, a small town about 170 km away from Helsinki. Tampere is Finland's second largest city and is also famous for the Moomin Museum (Muumimuseo).
I used the VHF repeater of Tampere and I was able to communicate with many stations, although it was a short stay. One of these stations, OH3BK, Ben, invited me to Tampere Radio Club.
OH2HMA Mike
I contacted him by phone and he picked me at my hotel in Helsinki. Mike's house was in the woods, far from the center of the city. His equipment was simple with the transceiver connected to GP and multi-band wire antennas. Since Finland has almost no high mountains and flat carved by glaciers the radio waves may be transmitted sufficiently even with this kind of antennas. We enjoyed lunch with his family of three children. I was able to hear a lot about their life especially in the cold and hard winter season. (July 3, 2000))

Tampere Radio Club Tampereen Radioamatöörit OH3TR
In Tampere, I stayed at a small hotel a little far from the center of the city. From here, I could easily access the repeater in the city and communicate with local stations.
One of them, OH3BK Ben, asked me to come to a club in Tampere, and he picked me up by car. A small building in the woods was a clubhouse, where the repeater station OH3TR was
installed. Since it was a weekday, I was able to meet only OH3NYB, but they explained the activity of the club in detail. (July 3, 2000)
Tampere Radio Club was an old club founded as "Tampereen Radiokerho" in 1924, and became the current "Tampereen Radio amatöörit" in 1955. Currently, this club has 200 members
and the current club station and repeater callsigns are OH3NE and OH3RNE, respectively. They also use OH3TAM as a special event station. Details can be found on the
club homepage.
